On April
15, 2004, EPA announced that there were 474 counties that were
identified as nonattainment for the 8-hour standard. On August
30, 2011, the EPA announced the number of nonattainment counties
at 242. Actually there are 240 counties currently in nonattainment
instead of 242 because Lake and Porter counties in Indiana have
attained the ozone standard but cannot be designated maintenance
status until the counties located in Illinois within the nonattainment
area attain the ozone standard. Maps are
available to inspect the current nonattainment areas.
